The failed attempt led to increased vigilance among the locals, who took it upon themselves to ensure Gacek’s safety, establishing a community watch to monitor his whereabouts.
A New Chapter at the Polish Institute for Animal Care
In April 2023, recognizing the growing concerns about Gacek’s well-being, authorities decided to intervene for his own safety.
He was admitted to the Polish Institute for Animal Care, a renowned facility dedicated to the welfare of animals. Upon examination, it was found that Gacek’s weight had reached an alarming 10 kg, far above the normal range of 5–6 kg for cats.
This obesity was likely due to the excessive feeding by well-meaning tourists and locals who wanted to show their affection.
Additionally, Gacek suffered from gingivitis, a common dental issue in cats, and arthritis, which affected his mobility.
The institute provided comprehensive medical treatment, including dental care and medication for arthritis. They also put Gacek on a strict diet and exercise regimen to help him shed the excess weight.
During his stay, Gacek became a favorite among the staff, who were impressed by his resilience and friendly nature.
A Happy Ending
By September 2023, Gacek’s life had taken a turn for the better. He had lost a significant amount of weight and his health had improved markedly.
The institute announced that Gacek had found a permanent home with a loving family who were committed to maintaining his diet and health regimen.
